A lager that finishes crisply but not bitter due to its blend of four hops. It didn't make The Beerman overly excited but it's very drinkable. Serve it to anyone.

Saranac Belgian Style Ale

Made with Hersbrucker & Tettnang Hops and 2 Row, Belgian Aromatic malts. It has a nice spicy yeast. A great Belgian style ale from Saranac the Magnificent. The Beerman has never met a Belgian style ale he didn't like and this is no exception. So far this is the best of the Winter Variety pack. It is also the third one that TB has sampled tonight. The Season's Best was great and the SB was pretty good. This makes TB want to try the rest of the pack tonight.

Best served with: Shellfish or more beers

Bock Full of Beerness Rating: 7 out of 10
Brewery: Matt
Website: www.saranac.com
Strength: 6.0%

Saranac Bock

The Beerman cracked one of these right after trying the Black Forest. There's nothing wrong with this beer; in fact there's quite a bit right with it, but it isn't as flavorful as some bocks. It neither makes nor breaks the variety pack.

Brewery: Matt
Website: www.saranac.com
Strength: 5.3%

Saranac Extra Special Bitter

A malty Brittish style bitter brewed with bitter Williamette, fruity English Fuggle and spicy Saaz hops. They play well with others to make a pretty good beer. The Beerman got this as part of the Winter Variety Pack. He tried it after the Season's Best so it didn't seem like it had a lot of flavor but it grew on TB in a good way. The Beerman Sez it's worth a seven and a half out of ten.

Best served with: Any bbq or most cow byproducts

Saaz and Tettnang hops. German Pilsner and Crystal malt. Nice but it doesn't blow The Beerman away. The Beerman Sez that there's nothing wrong with this beer and he will drink it with pride any time it's given to him or part of a variety pack but there are better marzens out there.

Best served with: Roasts and stews

Website: www.saranac.com
Strength: 5.3%

Saranac Season's Best

Brewed with Tettnang hops and Munich & Biscuit Malt, it has a medium to heaby mouthfeel. Its color dark amber and slight nuttiness to the flavor. It tastes like it would have more alcohol than the 5.3% but that's not a bad thing. Mikey likes it.

Best served with: Minnestrone Soup or Pork Ribs w/ BBQ Sauce. The Beerman Sez it would also go well with sushi.

Strange brew.. Rating: 5 out of 10
Brewery: Matt
Website: www.saranac.com
Strength: 4.8%

Saranac Vanilla Stout

Made with Willamette Hops and 2 Row, Chocolate malt. The Beerman was ready to hate this brew but the first six or eight ounces were prety tasty. After that it got to be too filling and too vanilla. It's part of the Winter Variety pack. TB will drink the other one in the case but not right away. TB will give it a five because it is different and half a pint is good.

Best served with: Dark Chocolate and/or Fruit Desserts

Texican for beer Rating: 7 out of 10
Brewery: Spoetzl
Website: www.shiner.com
Strength: 4.4%

Shiner Bock

The first time The Beerman tried this he hadn't become The Beerman yet but he had switched from MGD to Dundee's Honey Brown and was well was on his way. It was with a big, medium rare steak. The steak wasn't that good (kind of stringy) but the beer made up for it. It's a nice smooth, middle-of-the-road bock that isn't as strong as most so you can drink more of it.

Sleeman Cream Ale

If you like Genny Cream Ale you will love Sleeman's flagship brand. It is a very drinkable beer and one of the better cream ales out there but the Beerman is a bigger fan of their Honey Brown, Dark, and Steam.

Brewery: Sleeman

Sleeman Honey Brown Lager

The Beerman first saw this HBL at a hotel near Toronto when it was being delivered to a friend's table. It was love at first-sight and first taste. This is crisper and not as heavy as Dundee's HBL. If you buy the Beerman a Sleeman Honey Brown you will make a new friend.

Brewery: Sleeman
Website: www.sleeman.com
Strength: 5.5%

Sleeman Original Dark

Brewery: Sleeman
Website: www.sleeman.com

Sleeman Silver Creek Lager

A nice, very smooth, pilsner-style lager. The Beerman prefers more of something but there is nothing wrong with this beer. It would make a great introduction to beer for any Bud Light drinker.

Brewery: Sleeman
Website: www.sleeman.com

Sleeman Steam

Sleeman custom built a steam-cooling vessel to recreate the old steam brewing process. The Beerman appreciates their effort. In the Beerman's not-so-humble opinion this is the best steam beer on the market. The sight of this beer in a cooler has brought tears to the eyes of friends of the Beerman.

Brewery: Flying Dog
Website: www.flyingdogales.com
Strength: 5.8%

Moo! Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Brewery: New Glarus
Website: www.newglarusbrewing.com
Strength: 5.1%

Spotted Cow

The Beerman got this as a gift from his friends Fred and Toni. He misses them when they're not around but he does like hearing that they're going to Wisconsin because they bring this beer back with them.

Their website says, "Cask conditioned ale has been the popular choice among brews since long before prohibition. We continue this pioneer spirit with our Wisconsin farmhouse ale. Brewed with flaked barley and the finest Wisconsin malts. We even give a nod to our farmers with a little hint of corn. Naturally cloudy we allow the yeast to remain in the bottle to enhance fullness of flavors, which cannot be duplicated otherwise. Expect this ale to be fun, fruity and satisfying. You know you're in Wisconsin when you see the Spotted Cow."

The Beerman Sez, "Works for me. I'll give it a seven and a half. It's on TB's always get a sixpack list"

Best served with: The Beerman had it with burgers and kabobs.

Nostalgic can Rating: 6 out of 10
Brewery: Stroh's
Website: www.pabst.com
Strength: 4.6%

Stroh's

This is one of the first beers the Beerman ever tasted. It was on New Years Eve 1975-76 and probably from a can that looked like the image here. It also brings back memories of great tv and radio commercials, especially during Detroit Tigers games with Ernie Harwell. Stroh's is now owned by Pabst but it still tastes the same. It's a little weaker than what the Beerman usually buys but he likes its crispness, especially in hot weather. Its downside is that it doesn't usually agree with the Beerman's digestive system. The Beerman says that this is the tastiest laxative on the market.
